Do You Love the Color of the Sky

To celebrate Tumblr culture at 2025’s Dashcon 2 in Toronto, I wanted to try recreating one of the site’s most (in)famous and recognizable posts. The iconic color gradient of the “Do You Love the Colour of the Sky” post was something that I’d be able to visually translate into an original outfit to represent the post, so I designed an entire outfit around the gradient from head to toe.

Construction Process

This was my first time creating an original outfit design completely from scratch, rather than trying to recreate an existing character’s design. I knew I wanted to include some kind of long flowing fabric and initially designed the outfit as a long dress, before changing plans and converting it into a shoulder capelet, a corset-like top with peplum skirt, a long pair of billowing pants, and a light chiffon cape.

I used sewing patterns for the corset, peplum skirt, and pants. I hand-stitched silver stars with cross-stitch floss onto the front of the corset piece, and hammered grommets to lace it up with black ribbon.

I dip-dyed the capelet, pants, and cape by hand to match the gradient of the original post. I had to fold the fabric carefully and hang it above a pot on my stove so that I could dip single horizontal rows of the fabric to prevent the colors from overlapping. I spent a handful of consecutive hours standing on a chair in my kitchen over a near-boiling pot of colored water for this entire process.

I wanted to accessorize the outfit to complete the look! I created a crown with cotton batting and spray-painted wooden skewers, then used my Cricut machine to custom-cut vinyl letters to read out the opening half of the post’s iconic “Do you love the colour of the sky?” quote.

Since the end of the posts ends with “Which one?”, I also cut out wing shapes to lace into my shoes and added the words to each side.

I bought a white wig which I also dip-dyed blue at the bottom, to help it blend in with the gradient of the outfit. I tried for a more naturalistic hairstyle with the wig.

Finally, I wanted to make something to hand out to people at the convention. I made over 200 miniature keychain versions of the post, simplified just to the gradient by itself, and framed it to look like the Tumblr dashboard.
